Heel issues

So, I went ahead and knit the heel of my Hippy Crunchy sock last night. I had remembered posts about shallow heel issues on the KAL, but didn’t think too much of it. Short row heels are normally a little shallower than heel flaps, and the heel looks like the exact heel that I’ve done many times before. However, this is what I got:

heels

Not the best picture, but on the left is a Hippy Crunchy sock. On the right is my Waving Lace sock, also in Socks that Rock. You’ll notice the heel depth is about a half inch more on the Waving Lace sock. Basically the same heel, same yarn, worked over almost the same number of stitches (30 vs. 32) – shouldn’t be that big of a difference, right? But no, the sock on the right is knit with a US 1.5, while the sock on the left, due to the stretchy mesh pattern, is knit with a US 1. So now I have two options:

1) Frog and reknit the heel as written with the US 1.5, then switch back to the US 1 for the foot.

2) Frog and reknit the heel using a standard heel flap, since the openness of the pattern kind of begs for a higher heel anyway.

So, the second choice makes more design sense to me, but the first option is staying truer to the pattern. I had originally intended to knit all socks exactly as written, but I guess I messed that up with kit two, when I made up my own pattern, huh?

Orientation last night was good. There are 40 students in the program, and we’ll be in all the same classes at the same time for the next two years. It was easy to pick out who the extroverts were (not me). Surprisingly enough, there were five people from my company, five people from Brad’s, and six from my sister’s. The three of us work in the same industry, so I guess the diversity of the class is a little lacking (Ed is the only one in a different industry – odd man out. Then again, Brad is the only one who doesn’t drive a silver hatchback…) School officially starts the weekend of September 8th. We all had to give a brief introduction, and obviously my something interesting about me was the knitting thing (though apparently it should have been the fact that this will be my first full winter – people find that way too funny). Anyway, I was informed that I would not have time to knit due to the class load, but that was amended when I said I could knit and read at the same time. I wonder if this is going to be the right crowd to get away with knitting in class – I know I pay attention better when I’m knitting, but the professor doesn’t, and I worry more about what these professors think than the ones at SDSU. I was explaining the knitting and listening thing to my co-worker as we were walking back to our cars, and he said “what, you’ll just whip out a sock in class to get ready for winter?” and I said “I have one in my purse right now.” Not the answer he was expecting. :P
